Nullifications of &"La ilaha illallah&"

1-Shirk (assuming that there is a god who deserves to be worshipped beside Allah): Major Shirk is that which makes a person leave Islam, since Allah does not forgive those who die while they practice it. Major Shirk means to take a partner with Allah who you worship with Him and who you consider as your Lord, and to ascribe to the partner the same names and attributes as are ascribed to Allah. Allah (mighty and majestic is He) says: &"Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills; and he who associates others with Allah has certainly gone far astray&" (An-Nisâ&": 116).

It is strictly forbidden to supplicate anyone or anything except Allah. This we can understand from the following ayah: &"To Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them and leave (the company of) those who practice deviation concerning His names since they will be recompensed for what they have been doing&" (Al-A&"râf: 180)

Imam Abu Hanifa

The Munificent says: 65- It was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate (anything) with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers. 66- Rather, worship (only) Allah and be among the grateful (Az-Zumar: 65-66).

2-Whoever takes a mediator to mediate between Allah and him, and supplicates them, asks for their intercession, depends on, and draws near to them by worshipping them, such a person has contradicted the statement “La ilaha illallah”.

3-The person who does not admit that polytheists are kufaar (disbelievers), doubts this fact, or believes that their beliefs are correct, such a person is actually a kafer (disbeliever) himself, because this shows that he doubts what he should believe in if he truly believes in Islam; and Islam is the only religion that Allah accepts from a person. Whoever doubts the polytheism of those who worship any other god instead of Allah or ascribe partners to Allah, or doubts that the Jews, Christians and pagans are kufaar and that they will land up in Jahanem, or thinks that the religion of the polytheists may be correct - though the proof indicates the opposite - such a person is then a kafer too.

4-Whoever believes that the teachings of other religions or schools of thought have more guidance and are more correct than the teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and that other laws and traditions are more perfect and better than the sunnah of the Prophet, such a person is also a Kafer. An example of that is a person who prefers the rule of tribal laws or customs over the rule of Islamic law, or believes that such tribal laws or customs can be used to rule the people or that they are similar to the Islamic law. Such beliefs are considered as Kufr. Allah says: &"Whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed - then it is those who are the disbelievers&" (Al-Mâ&"idah: 44).

He also says: &"But no, by your Lord, they will not (truly) believe until they make you (O Muhammad) judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves, and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in (full, willing) submission&" (An-Nisâ&": 65).

5-Whoever hates what was conveyed to him by the Prophet (peace be upon him), even if he acts upon it, is a Kafer. A person who hates Salah (prayers) -for example- is a Kafer, even if he does actually perform them, because he does not like what Allah has commanded. One of the conditions of “La ilaha illallah” is to love all that has been revealed from Allah to us, and he who hates what the Prophet (peace be upon him) conveyed does not realize the meaning of the testimony that &"Muhammadan Rasolullah (Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)&", because this statement necessitates that one believes in the teachings and the sunnah of the Prophet.

6-Whoever ridicules any part of Allah&"s religion or its rewards and punishments is also a kafer, because he does not give the reverence which is due to this religion, which is an extension of its Revealer, Allah, or either the Prophet who conveyed it to us. Allah describes some people, who used to be Mu&"meneen, as kufaar just because they ridiculed the Prophet and his Sahaba. They said: “We have not seen anyone more eager to fill their stomachs nor lying so much with their tongues nor are more cowardly in the battlefield than the likes of these companions of ours.” Allah says about these: 65- And if you ask them, they will surely say: &"We were only conversing and playing.&" Say: &"Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking? 66- Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief&" (At-Taubah: 65-66).

Allah describes them as Kufaar though they used to be Mu&"meneen. This is indicated by the following ayah: “you have disbelieved after your belief” (At-Taubah: 66).

He confirms that they were Mu&"meneen before they uttered those words and that they then became kufaar because of what they said, even though they were talking in jest and were only trying to pass the time while they were travelling.

7-Sorcery: These are spells, charms, incantations and potions that influence the hearts and bodies, and lead to murder and a separation between a man and his wife. All such things are a kind of Kufr. Allah says: &"But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share&" (Al-Baqarah: 102).

And He says before that: &"But the two angels (Harut and Marut) do not teach anyone unless they say: ‘We are a trial, so do not disbelieve (by practicing magic)’&" (Al-Baqarah: 102).

&"The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Avoid the seven destructive things.” It was asked (by those present): “What are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Associating anyone or anything with Allah in worship; practicing sorcery, the killing of someone without a just cause whom Allah has forbidden, devouring the property of an orphan, eating usury, fleeing from the battlefield, and slandering chaste women who never even think of anything touching their chastity (never crossing their minds), and are good believers&" (Narrated by Al-Bukhari)

The Prophet (peace be upon him), also said: “Whoever ties a knot and blows on it, he has practiced magic; and whoever practices magic, he has committed Shirk (i.e. polytheism); and whoever hangs up something (as an amulet) he is left to it (to try to gain his) protection (from it)&" (Narrated by an-Nasa&"i.)

Astrology and believing that planets and stars can control or predict incidents that happen on earth is also part of sorcery. It has been narrated by Abu Dawood that Ibn Abbass said that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “He who acquires a branch of the knowledge of astrology, learns a branch of magic (of which he acquires more of as long as) he continues to do so&" (Narrated by Al-Baihaqi)

Allah (mighty and majestic is He) says: &"And the magician will not succeed, wherever he is&" (Tâ-Hâ: 69).

Sarf and &"Atf are also part of sorcery. They are magic spells that cause a person to hate something he is seeking for (sarf) or love something he is not seeking (‘atf).

Beneficial knowledge is that which urges a person to practice Tawheed and also that which results from it of offering services to humanity and contributing to its development. Harmful knowledge is that which urges a person to practice shirk and that which results from it of harming humanity and contributing to its corruption.

8-Supporting and assisting the polytheists against the Muslims. The proof for this is Allah’s statement: &"And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is (one) of them&" (Al-Mâ&"idah: 51).

The taking them as allies &"tawally&" mentioned here is different from mowalaah (i.e. to incline to them, take them as friends and love them), which is a major sin but less than the level of kufr. Taking them as allies, however, means to support the polytheists and to conspire with them against the Muslims, such is the condition of the hypocrites, and this means that they have preferred the polytheists and taken their side over that of the Muslims.

9-Whoever believes that some people are allowed to not implement the Sharee’ah (Islamic jurisprudence) of Muhammad (i.e. Islam) is a Kafer. It is not permissible for anyone to not implement the Prophet’s Sharee’ah (Islamic jurisprudence), because it is all encompassing for both the Jinn and mankind, and it is the last of all Sharaa’i (pl. of Sharee’ah), and Allah does not accept any religion from a person except Islam. Allah (peace be upon him) says: &"Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam&" (Âl-&"Imrân: 19).

He also says: &"And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers&" (Âl-&"Imrân: 85).

If the heart is not guided and drawn to Allah, while rejecting all other partners, then it is a heart of a polytheist.

Allah says: 31- Say (O Muhammad): &"If you should love Allah, then follow me, (so) Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.&" 32- Say: &"Obey Allah and the Messenger.&" But if they turn away - then indeed, Allah does not like the disbelievers (Âl-&"Imrân: 31-32).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: &"By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad, he amongst the community of Jews or Christians who hears about me but does not affirm his belief in that with which I have been sent, and dies in this state (of disbelief), he shall be but one of the denizens of Hell-Fire&"(Narrated by Muslim)

An example of this is the ignorant people who claim that their revered awleyaa (pl. of walee who is a pious man to whom some attribute characteristics rejected by Islam) have stopped following the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which is an act of sheer kufr.

10-Turning away from Allah’s Religion, and not learning it or implementing it is an act of disbelief. If one turns completely away from practicing the religion and instead practices the wrong belief that he believes in, and if he is called to follow Islam and its teachings but refuses, then he is a kafer.

Knowledge is a tree that bears fruits of beautiful delights, pious deeds and praised attributes. Ignorance, on the other hand, is a tree that bears fruits of evil manners and unpraiseworthy attributes.

These nullifications should be avoided if they are done intentionally, whether when one is serious or joking or even when a person is scared, except for a person who is coerced, when he answers only with his tongue, as Allah says: &"except for one who is forced (to renounce his religion) while his heart is secure in faith&" (An-Nahl: 106).

&"Whoever is coerced to become a kafer and his heart is contented with such a state, then he is really a kafer. He, however, who says words of disbelief to protect himself from being killed while his heart is still contented with Iman, then he is safe from Kufr. Allah says: &"except when taking precaution against them in prudence&" (Âl-&"Imrân: 28).
